I usually spend some time at the end of every year with my family asking some reflection questions.
It’s a time to pause in the middle of the weird mayhem that marks the strange in-between time between Christmas and New Years Days, the time where we are not sure what day it is or what we are feeling or whether or not those leftovers are still good from all the festivities.
They tend to spark interesting conversations and tether our hearts together in a way that opening presents and eating apple pie just is not able to. I am usually caught by surprise in beautiful ways and also learn quit a bit about myself and them as we chat, and my heart feels full and grateful and curious all at the same time.
So without further ado, here they are:
1. What is something that made me happy?
2. What is something that I learned?
3. What is something I wish I had done more of?
4. What is something that made me sad?
5. What is something I succeeded at?
6. What is something I regret?
7. What is something I want to do less of in the future?
8. What is something I want to learn this next year?
9. What is one thing that helps me to recharge?
The last one is my favorite question of all, because it reminds me that I am first a human being and not a human doing. It also reminds me that it’s good and right for me to be restored, whether it’s my body, mind or soul. This will look different from day to day, life season to life season, person to person and it’s worth putting at the top of my priority list.
I hope that sometime in the next day or two, you get a chance to give yourself a moment to reflect, either alone or with the people that you share your life with.
You are worth it. And so are they.
